The full paper trail behind a piece of data or an answer: where it originated, when it was fetched, what transformed it along the way. Broader than citation — it covers the data's whole journey, not just the last hop.
Why it matters: when an agent gives a wrong answer, provenance is how you find out whether the model failed or the data was already wrong when it arrived.
